The studyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s objectives were to establish the relationship between parental income, education level o f the parent, household composition, and parental occupation on children enrolment in preschool. The study employed cross-sectional design, targeting parents with children who should be in preschool, head teachers and the area chief of Starehe sub-county in Nairobi County. The researcher used snowball sampling to identify potential respondents in the study. The sample size comprised of parents with children who should have joined preschool. Documentary analysis was provided by the head-teachers showing preschool children enrolment. Interview schedule was used to collect information from parents while questionnaires were used for the head teachersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the area chief. Reliability of the instrument was ensured by computing a reliability coefficient and validity was tested through a pilot study. The data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The research utilized descriptive analysis and data was presented in form of tables, graphs and pie charts. This entails the statement of the problem, background information , and significance of the study, scope of the study and limitation of the study among others. 2 Background of the StudyAccording to UNESCO, Early Childhood is defined as the period from birth to 8 years old. A time of remarkable brain development, these years laid the foundation for subsequent learning. The terms pre-school education and Kindergarten emphasize education around the ages 3-6 years. Early Childhood Education (ECE) often focuses on child learning through play. However, many child care centers are now using more educational approaches. They are creating curricular and incorporating it into the early daily routines to foster greater educational learning. Ideas of ECE can be traced back to 400BC in Platoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s book, "The Republicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . Plato advocated that childhood education should be made interesting, and attractive through music, play, number work and geometrical exercises. Similarly, the importance of providing rich early experiences and impressions for children was expressed by John Amos Comenius and John Locke, (Demarest et al,(1993).Their ideas on effective early childhood teaching were expressed in their books: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"School of infancyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"Some Thoughts on Education,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ respectively.Later philosophers like Jean Jacques, Rousseau and Jean Heinrich Pestalozzi furthered concern for ECE by recognizing the importance of providing education to help young children suffering from deprivation due to war or slum conditions.
